Associated Press Twp. mayor takes to airwaves on WNJC Continued from Page 1B antenna is Kortman used to broadcast his show on 950 WPEN-AM in Philadelphia before the station changed to a sports talk format. "The airwaves are supposed to belong to the public, but they really don't," said John Forsythe, who purchased WNJC in 1994 for $161,000 at a federal bankruptcy sale. "Here, at our station, they do and for a reasonable amount of money." Forsythe, however, offered the Washington Township mayor's office a free half-hour block of time to fulfill the station's public service requirement.

He plans to extend the same offer next week to Deptford, where the station's "Quite honestly, it takes a mayor a lot of guts to sit down and do this kind of show," Forsythe said. "But it's the old getout-of-the-kitchen-if-you- can't-take-the-heat kind of thing." WNJC broadcasts at 5,000 watts and can be heard as far away as Wilmington, Kortman said many of his listeners might tune out when Moriarty, who was elected to a state Assembly seat last month, takes the hot seat. To counteract that, Moriarty also will field consumer affairs questions and tackle New Jersey issues, Kortman said. The house where Hitchner had lived all his life was sold in July and the new owner, an unnamed investor, apparently moved to have him evicted, Elton said.

"I think that's what brought this to a head," he said. "We've been working with him since July to get a new home for him or some other arrangements, but to no avail. "There's a lot of people in town who do what they can for him. Evidently, he's having a real hard time with this right now," he said. Elton said the police chief was familiar with Hitchner and thought it best to make a personal visit after hearing that he had pulled out a sword.

"If they didn't feel comfortable going to the door, they wouldn't have gone," Elton said. The caregiver called police Wednesday morning to report that Hitchner was acting more irrationally than normal. Hitchner, who calls himself "the Colonel," has prior police reports involving domestic violence, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, said Deptford Police Chief John Marolt, who acted as spokesman earlier in the day for departments involved in handling the standoff. Detours along Glassboro Road, the borough's main artery, diverted traffic around the scene. Borough officials worried about the disruption to residents who live close to the scene.

Audrey Graham, 73, was told to leave her house on Clearview Avenue close to the scene at 11 a.m. She and her husband ran errands, visited their daughter in East Greenwich and went to a restaurant for dinner. They made their way to the Woodbury Heights fire station on Elm Avenue Wednesday evening. "It's been awful long," said Graham, who depends on an oxygen tank to breathe. "I want to go home.

I'm getting tired." Her husband went out to a pharmacy to pick up at least a half a dozen medications that she would need if they had to stay the night at the township's fire station rather than being allowed to return home. John Lukas, 42, a plumber, returned to his Glassboro Road home after work around 4 p.m. Wednesday and was turned away. He said he was trying not to think about spending the night at the fire station. "You got to try to end this thing peacefully if you can," he said.

"There ain't no sense in people getting hurt." Reach Wil Shamlin at (856) 251-3346 or Staff writer Lisa Grzyboski contributed to this report..
