Melissa Davis Black.

Services for Melissa Davis Black will be at noon Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R. L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Black died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Rankin Medical Center. She was 79.

She was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Black; two brothers, Frank Davis and Richard Lee Davis Jr.; and her parents, Richard and Rosie Conner Davis.

She is survived by two sons, Jack Curtis Black and Sye Black, both of Detroit; a daughter, Delores Black Jenkins of Houston, Texas; one brother, Willie A. Davis of Detroit; two sisters, Rosie Davis Slaughter of Chicago and Lucy Davis Davenport of Vicksburg; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Vivian Rabb Cagnolatti.

TALLULAH – Services for Vivian Rabb Cagnolatti were this morning at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Tallulah. Burial followed at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah.

Mrs. Cagnolatti died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. She was 84.

She was born in Wilkinson County and had lived in Tallulah most of her life. She was a homemaker and member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Cagnolatti Copes of Tallulah; one son, Woody Cagnolatti of Placquemine, La.; one brother, Elmo Rabb of Tallulah; one sister, Elizabeth Rabb Crothers of Tallulah; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Mike Rabb, Doug Crothers, Mac Cagnolatti, David Cagnolatti, Bobby Todd and Jackie Varner.

Annette Brown Chambers.

Annette Brown Chambers died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. She was 87.

Mrs. Chambers was a homemaker. She was a member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave Chambers; and her parents, Prince Brown and Kesi Hicks.

Survivors include her brother, Jessie Brown of Fountain, Colo.; two sisters, Albertha Mitchell of Randolph, Ill., and Dorothy Dukes of Detroit; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

W. H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Frank Dimbly Sr.

Frank Dimbly Sr. died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 70.

Mr. Dimbly was employed with Murdock Aircraft in Los Angeles. He was a member of Locust Grove M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Beulah Hamlin Demby; two sons, Frank Dimbly Jr. and Donald Oliver; one daughter, Jacqueline B. Moffett; and two brothers, William Demby and Robert Demby Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Banks Dimbly of Vicksburg; one daughter, Francine Dimbly of Los Angeles; one brother, Alex Demby of Vicksburg; one sister, Etta Mae Brown of Pearl; and other relatives, including Annie Mae Banks of Pearl.

W. H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

William M. Palmer.

William M. Palmer died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. He was 75.

Mr. Palmer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a retired bus driver for Vicksburg Warren School District.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Palmer Sr. and Estelle Palmer; two brothers, Tom Palmer Jr. and Farrell Queen; and two sisters, Daisy Palmer Jefferson and Betty Palmer Williams.

Survivors include one sister, Laura Palmer Taylor of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including James E. Jefferson Jr., Monica T. Shorter and LaTannya T. Young, all of Vicksburg.

Norvella Collins.

Services for Norvella &#8220Sista” Collins will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ms. Collins died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 51.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lubertha Bell; and one brother, Tyrone Collins.

Survivors include two sons, Jesse Collins and Baraka Kelly, both of Nashville; two daughters, Chaka Kelly and La Teeka Kelly, both of Vicksburg; her father, Richard Carson Sr.; five brothers, Richard Carson Jr., Michael Carson, Maurice Carson and Melvin Carson, all of Illinois, and Donald Carson of Washington D.C.; four sisters, Sherry Ann Bell of California, Helen Carson and Rebecca Carson, both of Illinois, and Betty Carson of Oklahoma; four grandchildren; other relatives and friends, including Gwendolyn Harris of Vicksburg and Yolanda Stampley of Jackson.

Julia Lee Evans.

Services for Julia Lee Evans will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Seven Star M.B. Church with the Rev. Jessie Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Seven Star Cemetery in Utica under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at the church.

Mrs. Evans died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 88.

A homemaker, Mrs. Evans was a member of Seven Star M.B. Church, where she was formerly in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynch Evans Sr.; her parents, James and Daisy James Casey; two stepsons, R.D. Evans and J.D. Evans; a stepdaughter, Eliza Mae Bland; three brothers, James Casey, Leon Casey and Tommy Casey; and three sisters, Lena Casey, Hanna Wilkerson and Clara Bell Jones.

Survivors include three sons, Ray Evans of Vicksburg and J.C. Evans and Vernon Evans, both of Utica; a stepson, Lynch Evans Jr. of Jackson; two daughters, Annie Bell Evans of Utica and Doris Price of Clinton; two stepdaughters, Lillian Robinson of Marrero, La., and Mary Helen Miles of Utica; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Donna Kay Flemons.

RAYMOND – Donna Kay Flemons, 39, of Raymond, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after a courageous fight with leukemia.

Visitation will be 5-8 tonight at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram and 10-11 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Byram. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with graveside services at 1 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.

Donna’s sense of humor and smile could make strangers feel like lifelong friends. Her love for Jesus Christ poured out in the way she took care of those around her. Donna’s greatest desire was for others to know and accept the love she found in Christ. She also had a love for God’s Word and had this verse marked in her Bible on the day she passed away: &#8220One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I will seek; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple,” Psalm 27:4.

She is survived by her children, Joshua Rushing of Jackson, Katie Rushing of Clarksdale and Jake Flemons of Raymond; mother, Sybil Harold of Vicksburg; father, David Thompson of Drew; brothers, Leslie Dwayne Thompson of Drew and Daniel Ray Thompson and William Paul Shelby, both of Vicksburg; sisters, Patricia Ann Thompson of Horn Lake, Connie Marie Thompson of Jackson and Mary Pauline Thompson of Southaven.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Cassie and Clara Jackson and Coleman and Mary Thompson; and a nephew, John David Thompson.

Memorials may be made to Butterfly Ministries, the Women’s Ministry of Hillcrest Baptist Church, 5950 Terry Road, Byram, MS 39272.

Herman Linton Gaines.

LORMAN – Herman Linton Gaines died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. He was 83.

Mr. Gaines retired from General Motors. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Udoxie M. Gaines of Lorman; three sons, Kenneth Gaines of Houston, Kendall Gaines and Conrad Gaines, both of Detroit; four brothers, Thomas Gaines, Herbert Gaines and Whitman Gaines, all of Detroit, and Walter Gaines of Glendale, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Smith of Atlanta and Edith Watkins of Ferndale, Mich.; and other relatives and friends, including Ricky and Peaches Thomas, Joyce Weddington, Ray Ray Thomas and Dawn Thomas, all of Lorman.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Lorman with the Rev. Kemp Burley officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the church.

Harold Vernon Hatchett.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Services for Harold Vernon Hatchett will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. James Archer officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home in Vicksburg.

Mr. Hatchett died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Ohio State University East Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He was 46.

He was a self-employed carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Hatchett Jr.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Williams Hatchett of Vicksburg; six brothers, John Hatchett, Albert Hatchett III and Rayfield Hatchett, all of Vicksburg, Phillip Hatchett and Louis Hatchett, both of Denver, and Joel Hatchett of Fort Worth, Texas; six sisters, Dorothy Rogers, Mary Ann Hatchett, Alfreda Taylor, Donna Jones and Tammy Hatchett, all of Vicksburg, and Cherry Hatchett of Denver; other relatives and friends including Charlene King of Columbus.

William Edward Jenkins.

DELTA – William Edward &#8220Bill” Jenkins died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. He was 83.

Formerly of Vicksburg, Mr. Jenkins was a resident of Delta. He was born in Huntington, W.Va. He was employed at Hampton Heat & Air for 18 years and was a former employee of Twin City Pontiac in Monroe, La.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 until 1945.

He was preceded in death by his father, Solomon David Jenkins; and his mother, Mary Louise White Curtis.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Retha Faye Jenkins of Delta; four sons, Warren David Jenkins and Jay Curtis Jenkins, both of West Monroe, William Preston Jenkins of Choudrant, La., and Mark Allen Jenkins of Wallingford, Ky.; four daughters, Cathy Rae Thomas of Bastrop, La., Terry Fuller of Delta, Karen Sealey of Butler, Ala., and Barbara Guzman of Vicksburg; and 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Choudrant. Burial will follow.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road in Monroe.

Clarence D. Scott.

Services for Clarence D. Scott will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wayside Apostolic Church of Deliverance with the Rev. Frank Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from noon until the service.

Mr. Scott died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 57.

Mr. Scott was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a 1966 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School. He was a member of Wayside Apostolic Church of Deliverance.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruth Scott; two sisters, Erma Scott and Mary A. Chambers.

Survivors include his wife, Ruthie Scott of Vicksburg; one son, Michael Scott of Hurley; one daughter, Clarissa Scott of Vicksburg; two stepsons, Darrell Green of Jackson and Joel Bracey of Atlanta; two stepdaughters, Veronica Bracey of Chicago and Hope Bracey of Vicksburg; one brother, James Scott of Vicksburg; one sister, Rosa Sanders of Vicksburg; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives, including Andrew Jones, Edna Williams and the Scott, Gibson, Heard, Sanders, Lyons, Chambers, Wilson, Williams, Marbra, Hickman, Ragan, Shelton, Hicks, Smith, Davis, Allen and Sorrell families, all of Vicksburg.

Sylvester L. Smith Sr.

Services for Sylvester L. &#8220Pijoe” Smith Sr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Locust Grove M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. He was 47.

Mr. Smith was employed with River City Rescue Mission. He was retired from the City of Vicksburg.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Kiner Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Luella &#8220Leola” Cooper of Vicksburg; his caretaker, Carolyn Bell of Vicksburg; his sons, Sylvester Smith Jr. and Michael Smith, both of Sioux City, Iowa; one daughter, Michelle Smith of Sioux City; three brothers, Richard Cooper III of Vicksburg, Roosevelt Cooper Jr. of Port Arthur, Texas, and Peter Kiner of Jackson; eight sisters, Mary Smith White, Tanya Kenney, Rachel Cooper, all of Vicksburg, Carolyn Smith and Tangie Cooper, both of Bellwood, Ill., Canary B. Cooper of Jackson, Chandra Cooper of Albion, Mich., and Reva Cooper of Memphis; and other relatives and friends.

Laura Jones Staggs.

CLINTON – Laura Jones Staggs died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at her home in Clinton. She was 64.

Mrs. Staggs was born and raised in Vicksburg. She was a former employee of Presley’s Truck Stop, where she worked for more than 10 years. She moved to Clinton, where she worked at SOS Truck Stop for more than 15 years before retiring three years ago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben F. and Margie Smithhart Jones.

She is survived by a daughter, Penny McCrory of Brandon; three brothers, Ben Jones and Jimmy Jones, both of Vicksburg, and Travis Jones of Memphis; seven sisters, Helen Davis, Shirley Womble, Carol Hughes and Brenda Jones, all of Vicksburg, Nella Walley and Dianne Dent, both of Prentiss, and Martha Robinson of Edwards; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Revs. Rick Henson and Jim Maulding officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Alton Jones, Terry Wilson, Harold Watkins, Todd McDonald, Gary Womble and Richard Brumfield.

Oleavie Stewart.

Oleavie Stewart died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. She was 92.

Mrs. Stewart was a homemaker. She was a member of Rock of Ages M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Stewart; her parents, Sam and Marylizzie Allen Gray; five sons, Joseph Stewart Jr., Carl Stewart, Kenneth Stewart, Tim Stewart and George Stewart; one daughter, Gloria Stewart; two sisters, Mae Hannah Gray and Leola Clark; and four brothers, Sam Gray, Porter Gray, Ruben Gray and Governor Gray.

Survivors include three sons, Phillip Stewart of Vicksburg and Bill Stewart and Clifton Stewart, both of Saginaw, Mich.; three daughters, Mary Marshall and Dorothy Lee Stewart, both of Vicksburg, and Carrie Miller of Utica; one sister, Arsenia Pierce of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends.

Williams Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Tiffany LaShun Taliaferro.

LELAND – Tiffany LaShun Taliaferro died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, as the result of a car accident in Leland. She was 28.

Ms. Taliaferro was born in Greenville. She was a former resident of Vicksburg and a 2003 graduate of Alcorn State University. She was a member of Mount Calvary M.B. Church.

Survivors include her parents, Jimmie Lee Taliaferro of Greenville and James Lowe and Rhonda Taliaferro-Lowe, both of Leland; her fiance, David Sykes of Sunflower; two grandmothers, Ruby Eason of Columbus, Ga., and Lue Ora Taliaferro of Greenville; two brothers, Jerry Robinson Jr. of Henderson, N.C., and Jimmie E. Taliaferro of Greenville; one stepbrother, James Wendell Lowe of Leland; and other relatives and friends, including, the Rev. Mincer Minor, Rhonda Minor, Mincer Minor III, Edmund Minor and Carl Ryan Minor, all of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Eddie Eason and Matilda Eason; and paternal grandfather, Lutherlia Taliaferro.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem M.B. Church in Greenville with the Rev. Willie E. Tinson officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home in Greenville. Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the church.

Katie Beatrice Wells.

PORT GIBSON – Katie Beatrice Wells died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at her home in Port Gibson. She was 70.

Mrs. Wells was a member of Springhill Baptist Church, the Baptist Aid and the Christian Aid.

Survivors include four sons, Don Keller of Bowie, Md., Marvin Keller of Houston and Eddie Wells Jr. and Michael Wells, both of Port Gibson; two daughters, Connie Herron of San Antonio and Isabelle Sanders of Vicksburg; one sister, Marie Keller of Port Gibson; 11 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Willie Skinner, Gustina Jackson, Isabelle Person and Sharon Harvey, all of Port Gibson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Jimmy Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
