The Public Services Librarian, working closely with the library team, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the forward-facing public service areas, such as, the circulation desk, reserves, reference & information desks, periodicals, document delivery, and interlibrary loan (ILL). This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities.
The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
• Oversees the daily operations of the public services area: coordinates on-duty schedules and provides coverage for all related librarian and staff absences; provides direct circulation and reference services and support to students, faculty, staff, and other library users. Drafts, revises, implements, and evaluates circulation and reference policies. Investigates and independently solves patron and public access circulation and reference problems with referral to the Department Head when appropriate. Solves disputes with faculty, students, and others by analyzing the problems and recommending practical solutions.
• Assists in recruiting, training, and supervising personnel to provide exceptional customer service in-person and online.
• Coordinates and manages the library management system circulation functions; creates, edits, and deletes library catalog records, instructs, and assists library users in using the library catalog including recalls, holds, and renewals, establishes staff and student employee access privilege levels; conducts training in the operational application and use of the circulation functions: manages library user accounts and circulation item record profile; establishes loan and request terms and policies; identifies and modifies overdue, recall, and notice parameters in collaboration with the Systems Librarian.
• Selects and purchases electronic and print textbooks for the reserve collection. Establishes strategic partnerships with the teaching faculty, vendors, and campus bookstore; processes materials to make them discoverable via the ILS discovery systems.
• Regularly performs and oversees stack maintenance, ensuring books are shelved in LC order and removing any damaged materials. In collaboration with the Collection Development Librarians and the Electronic Resources Librarian, coordinates periodic collection inventory and review and suggesting purchases for an assigned subject area.
• Provides reference services in-person and online; participates in all aspects of library online or face-to-face instructional services, including providing library tours, workshops, orientations and the creation of course-specific resources, guides, online tutorials, and web pages for use in both traditional and virtual environments. Collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum and to prepare library-research-related sessions and resources to meet student learning needs. Participates in the development and assessment of library instructional activities and programs. Maintains awareness of emerging trends in information literacy, library instruction, research retrieval and instructional technology.
• Conducts and uses assessment strategies and data to plan, improve, and deliver innovative library services with measurable impact to ensure that the diverse needs of students, faculty and other library users are being met.
• Actively contributes to departmental and campus-wide initiatives to promote and increase awareness of library services, resources, and programs, especially to underserved and/or minoritized student populations. Collaborates with library and inter-disciplinary colleagues in college-wide initiatives to advance the library's role in student learning and success in addition to serving on campus-wide committees and taskforces.
• Manages multiple departmental and campus-wide projects simultaneously to meet college and departmental deadlines.
• Actively participates in the LBCC community through committees, teams, working groups, projects, or initiatives that further the College's mission.
• Stays abreast of innovative academic library customer service trends and practices and make improvements, recommendations, and/or implementing changes, as necessary.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position and the District's mission and philosophy.

Evidence of sensitivity, understanding, and the ability to manage a library unit AND effectively provide assistance to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
Desirable Qualifications
• Experience working in the public services area.
• Knowledge of Alma or experience working with Integrated Library Systems.
• Experience with needs assessment, knowledge of assessment trends.
• Experience providing in-depth information and research assistance virtually and in-person; knowledge of principles and techniques used in bibliographic research.
• Familiarity with open access and open educational resources.
• Experience processing ILL requests using OCLC's WorldShare platform and serving as primary contact for resource sharing.
• Working knowledge of: library collection and its organization, as well as classification schemes national standards pertaining to library operations, including a thorough knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to interpret and apply them, as well as explain them to patrons, to ensure compliance; library accounting and budget procedures and allocation processes, and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in handling vendor accounts and the budget process, practices and procedures.
• Librarian experience that reflects culturally responsive library practices.
